The story of Domaine Jean-Luc Burguet is not merely one of winemaking; it is a profound family saga woven from deep respect for the land, a relentless pursuit of purity, and an unwavering commitment to tradition. Rooted in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this is a domaine built from the ground up, where each generation has elevated the work of the last to create wines of exceptional finesse and character.
The foundation was laid by Alain Burguet, a vigneron in the truest sense. In the 1970s, when the use of herbicides was widespread, Alain was a pioneer, championing natural viticulture. He understood instinctively that great wine begins in the soil, practicing plowing and composting to nurture the vines authentically. His reputation, built on a relentless dedication to quality, quickly caught the attention of top restaurateurs and critics.
In 2011, Alain passed the torch to his sons, Jean-Luc and Eric. They honored their father’s foundation while deepening the commitment to nature—converting to fully organic farming in 2012 and embracing biodynamic methods guided by the lunar calendar. They introduced meticulous triple-sorting of grapes, gentle vinification with minimal new oak and sulfur, and expanded the family’s precious vineyard holdings.
In 2023, the domaine entered an exciting new chapter. Jean-Luc Burguet became the sole proprietor, acquiring his brother’s shares to lead the estate with a singular vision. Now operating as Domaine Jean-Luc Burguet, this change marks a continuation of a storied legacy, now steered by one dedicated captain. Today, the domaine spans nearly 10 hectares—a rich tapestry of treasured old vines and premier crus.
What defines a Burguet wine is its profound authenticity. In the vineyard, the focus is on exceptionally low yields (just 28-30 hl/ha) from vines that are, for the most part, decades old. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention: 100% destemmed grapes ferment with native yeasts, and the wines are aged for up to 20 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.
The result is a pure, expressive reflection of Gevrey-Chambertin—wines of intensity, focus, and remarkable elegance.
This commitment to excellence is perhaps best exemplified by their legendary cuvée, Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes. A blend of more than 22 different climats from vines planted between the early 1900s and 1940s, this wine possesses a complexity that has earned it legendary status. Renowned critic Yu-Sen Lin called it "the most perfect village-level red wine in Gevrey-Chambertin"—a wine that can leave many premier crus, and even some grand crus, "looking embarrassed."
From Alain’s early days of organic farming to Jean-Luc’s current pursuit of biodynamic excellence, the story of this domaine is one of unwavering commitment to nature. It is a testament to the belief that the finest wines are not made, but rather, revealed.
